Color temperature is measured in Kelvins. The acronym or abbreviation of Kelvin is K. Light color temperature is not an indication of the amount of heat a automotive light bulb produces when on. It is a description of the warmth or coolness of the light output. The chart below shows the colors graduating from orange yellow to white and then to blue. Older incandescent sealed beam headlights and lamps where in the 2500 to 2700K range. Halogen lights used in fog or composite headlight driving configurations are in the 3000K range. HID lights start at 3000K and can reach up to 10,000K. The newer LED lights can be made to have light output 100 to 10,000K. The higher the color temperature does not mean the brighter the light output. Brightness is measured in Lumens. 4500K is about the highest white color temp you want for street applications. Anything after that is blue light. |
