Get your car, truck, van, crossover or suv ready for winter Throw a bag of rock salt in the trunk of you car to melt ice and a bag of sand to improve traction if you get stuck in the snow. The weight of the sand and rock salt also helps improve traction in rear wheel / AWD vehicles. Consider a snow shovel to dig yourself out and blankets to keep you or your passengers warm. A ice scraper and a snow brush will always come in handy.

Purchase or make up your own emergency road kit which may include items such as a distress flag, a battery powered or hand cranked radio / flashlight, road safety flares, tool kit, tow rope, battery booster / jumper cables, cell phone, etc.

How To Winterize Your Ride

Check front and rear brakes for wear.

Address any dash check engine lights, abs, etc.

Check your tires for wear, including your spare. Consider snow tires or tire chains.

Replace fuel filter and air filter.

Battery should be in tip-top condition and battery terminals cleaned.

Check engine oil, power steering fluid and brake fluid levels.

Ensure engine antifreeze level is sufficient to avoid freezing.

Check headlights, taillights, side marker and flashing hazard / turn signal lights for functionality.

Ensure the car heater and window defroster work properly.

Check and or repair your windshield wipers. Ensure proper washer fluid level. Consider winter wiper blades.

Check for leaks in the exhaust system; repair or replace as necessary. Carbon monoxide poisoning is deadly and usually gives you no warning.
